Behind the camera

I've always been interested in creating things, and since I was young, I've loved using cameras to do that. I got my first DSLR fairly early on and spent years learning photography, taking my camera out whenever I could or setting up makeshift product shoots at home with white paper and a few LEDs. I was always interested in videography too, but for a long time I didn't have a camera that was good enough for it. Once phone cameras improved, I started making mini films with friends and editing whatever ideas we came up with. Eventually, I saved up for my first proper video camera and just kept going from there, making more things and gradually taking on bigger projects.

Since then, I've filmed sporting events, interviews, promotional videos, live events, a documentary and plenty more, both around the UK and abroad. My brother is an athlete, so following his training and events gave me plenty of opportunities to practise. It also brought some interesting challenges, particularly with sports like cycling, where everything is happening over long distances and you have to work out how to keep up and be in the right place at the right time. I like the variety that comes with different projects and never knowing exactly what the next shoot will involve. I normally handle the full process myself, from planning what needs to be captured through to editing and colour grading everything in Premiere Pro.

I also love flying drones, and there's just something so cool about the quality of footage you can now capture from the sky. It gives you a completely different perspective and can turn a scene into something much bigger and more cinematic. I've spent several years flying different types of drones, from smaller camera drones to larger cine setups, and more recently I've started getting into FPV. Photography is still a big part of what I do too and often can fit alongside my videography work or taking stills from the videos themselves.

Behind the keyboard

I started making websites using Wix in 2017. What I enjoyed most was having the freedom to decide exactly how everything should look, which I think stemmed from the same interest that led me to do a lot of design work. I liked experimenting with layouts, colours and small details, trying to make each page feel clean and easy to use. I would spend hours working on even the simplest pages, adjusting things until they felt right. At that point, my websites were mostly focused on the front end, but it gave me years to develop my own sense of design and learn what makes a website feel good to use.

As I started wanting my websites to do more, I spent a lot of time trying to add custom code directly into Wix and finding ways around the limits of the standard editor. Things changed in 2023 when AI became capable of producing genuinely useful code. Instead of trying to squeeze more functionality into an existing website builder, I could take the ideas and designs I already had and build the entire site myself. It started with adding more functionality, but quickly became a case of seeing how far I could push each project and how complex I could make it.

Since then, I've built online stores, finance dashboards, complete business management software and a growing collection of single-player and multiplayer games. One of my biggest projects is a production management system that follows an item through every stage, from its initial creation to production, stock and fulfilment. Each project has taught me something different, especially when an idea that sounds fairly simple turns into a much bigger challenge once I begin working through everything it needs to do.

I still enjoy the design side just as much as I did when I first started, but now the design is only one part of what I can build. If a project needs its own dashboard, management system or a feature that doesn't already exist, I like being able to keep going and figure out how to make it work. It means the things I build can be shaped around the idea or business behind them, rather than being limited by whatever existing solution is already popular.
